Event 1 Improvisation at Axbridge The reservoir was glassy when we arrived so I busied myself inflating marks and erecting flags, while Ady busied himself preparing registration and doing all the easy work. Surprisingly all Out of necessity race 1 was a tri-maran paddle race followed by a slip slide dash to the finish. The Wombles came storming through the finish to clean up on the rest of the teams, with the Flyers chasing them hard for second place. Paddle power Due to the wind god not playing ball and the only disturbance on the water being the left over ripples of race 1, the second race was an individual paddle race around the same course. Thomas Ottermill of the Screamers powered his way into first place, closely followed by Harry Page of the Animals. Negotiating the slippery concrete and mud at the side of the water was as good a test of skill any one has seen in a while. Another paddle race was held in the opposite direction, followed by a break for lunch. George Shillito, Martin Heaslip and a few able volunteers literally cooked up a storm on the BBQ. The water level must have risen 3mm with all the rain the produced. A faint zephyr After lunch there was finally a little wind so a course was set and briefings done to try and make the most of what little wind we had. Ady and I were struggling to run the race from under an umbrella, so as I had to keep the scores dry and was the oldest Jordan Mayes from Croft Farm (Nielson) proved a convincing winner in the 6.8 open fleet while there was a battle for second place overall and first in the 6.8 Techno fleet between Tom Davies (Wimbleball) and Harry Clarke from SCOEC. This battle was really close until Tom was unfortunately slowed down by some novice sailors at the last mark. Congratulations go to Axbridge Animals for winning the team prize on home waters. Paul Hipwell the Commodore of BCYC presented the prizes, thanked all the sponsors and RYA for making the event happen. Paul then led the competitors and parents into singing happy birthday to Ady who is trying hard to catch me up age-wise. Team winners - Axbridge Animals Report written by: |

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
