Event 2 Good turnout at Notts County
The water near Hoveringham in Nottingham is the Home of the Notts County Outlaws. The home team had put a large team together to compete against the visiting teams, Carsington Comets, Rutland Rockets and the Pitsford Pirates.
Light and shifty conditions make long races The weather was a world apart from the last event at Rutland where the strong winds had blown through the race course at 25mph plus. In contrast, at Notts County the very light and changeable winds made just completing a race course very difficult. With 24 competitors, the start line was quite busy and all competitors had to work hard to keep a good start on all races. In the morning the changeable winds meant that race one was almost half an hour long and involved a slow beat up to the top mark and, following the wind shift, another long upwind slog to the finish line! Winners from event 1 dominate again Even with these tricky conditions, the racing in the morning soon started to confirm that the 3.5m class and the 5.5m class were still going to be dominated by the event one winners; Robert York (Rutland Rockets) 3.5m and Jade Rodgers (Carsington Comets) 5.5m. Other competitors didnt see this as an excuse to back off, with all of the racing very close in each class. Managing to get 3 races in during the morning session gave each competitor one discard and brought the scoring even closer. With such a large team, Notts County Outlaws looked to be in a strong position to take the team event, following event 1 where Carsington Comets had dominated. However, all of the teams were keen to keep their scores at the top. Close starts in the afternoon After a light lunch of pie and chips in the clubhouse?! Racing started again and we managed to get another 4 races in during the afternoon. The wind, whilst still light, was a bit more settled and allowed all of the starts to be very close. Rutland Rockets again dominated the 3.5m fleet, with just their two sailors The 4.5m class was the largest with 10 competitors. The 5 from Notts County made the team challenge look a little one-sided. However, Matt Leahey (Carsington Comets) still managed to clinch victory! At the end of the day there was a lap of honour for Ed (Carsington Comets) who will now be too old to race and wanted to leave in style! Carsington Comets come out on top At the close of racing the prize giving took place in the clubhouse and all trophies and certificates were presented by the club commodore. The team scores saw a slight surprise with the Carsington Comets still managing to take the team prize despite having fewer sailors than the Notts County Outlaws. The Pitsford Pirates had fielded a larger team at this event but both they and the Rutland Rockets had much smaller teams than the Comets and the Outlaws. All teams are now looking forward to event 3 at Carsington, where the home team is hoping to continue its dominance in the team scores and all other teams are hoping to challenge them on home turf. Saturday 30th June, 10.30 briefing, hope to see you there! Cheers, Ben. Team winners - Carsington Comets

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
