Event 3 Carsington Comets dominate on home waters Despite local flooding, and the forecast of further rain and storms, this Saturday saw the teams from the midlands area racing at Carsington. It was event 3 of the RYA Team 15 junior windsurfing competition and the 5 teams all arrived ready for a full day of racing action.
Whilst a bit grey, the weather conditions seemed to be a lot more favourable than the previous two events. With a steady force 2/3 from the South West, the course was set and all fleets briefed on which course they would be racing. The 3.5m class racing an across wind buoy, although this course had been extended further than usual so the small guys were going to have a longer race than they were used to. All other fleets were racing a box course, but the big guns in the two 6.8m classes were going to complete 2 laps for each race! Regular winners As soon as the racing started it became clear that some of the regular class winners were not willing to give up their titles. Robert York (Rutland Rockets) was straight into the lead in the 3.5m and Jake Patrick (Pitsford Pirates) was winning in the 6.8m open class. This was the first event this season where we had competitors in the 6.8m Techno fleet and Dale Burgess (Carsington Comets) was enjoying his transition into this fleet by winning in his usual style of a freestyle move over the finish line. The 5.5m fleet was a lot closer than the previous events as Jade Rogers (Carsington Comets) was fighting off a challenge from Robyn Robinson (Bosworth Bullets). With four races before a lunch break, the competitors had to work hard to use their energy in the right way. All fleets were doing a slightly larger course than normal, but as the standard of sailing – especially the starts – was so good, each race was over quickly ready for the next. Competition gets ever closer After lunch, another 3 races in quick succession meant that all sailors had 2 discards on the official scoring. It had also shown how close the competition was becoming. In the 3.5m class Robert Yorks team mate Alice Butts had taken 2 first places
After another quick break, there was one more race, the epic! Each fleet was to complete the same course as previously, but this time 2 laps! For the 6.8m this was simple as they had been doing this all day, but for the smaller fleets this made the racecourse quite large. However, all competitors took on this challenge and at the end of the race sailed for home. All that is, except Andrew Smith (Carsington Comets) who had to sail his lap of honour as he will be retiring now due to his age. Carsington Comets strengthen their position For full list of results see results page. Team Scores: The team results now mean that Carsington Comets seem almost unbeatable and are in prime position to win the series and thus go on to the Champions Cup later in the year. However, before that we have another regional event, Chase Water Saturday 21st July. As always briefing will be approx 10.30 with first race approx 11 am. Thanks to Carsington Sports and Leisure for the use of their facilities and safety cover. Also, thanks to the UKWA for producing the results on the day and to Jim for helping me in the committee boat.

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
