Event 3
As everybody rigged and registered, there was no sign of the wind that blew so many of the competitors of the water last year. So the young at heart graduated towards the picturesque rustic jetty and the prospect of spending a day admiring the Scottish scenery reflected on the water, was quickly destroyed by 44 kids enthusiastically throwing themselves, each other and the occasional coach, into the water. Race Officer Iain Jackson stepped in and restored order with a paddling race of quite epic length. Once everyone was wet and exhausted, the first hint of wind started to pick up and the prospect of some serious racing was back on the agenda. Improving slightly through the day, Iain managed 3 races for each fleet. With 14 sailors, the 3.5m fleet was the largest. Dark horses Loch Insh Monsters dominated the class taking the first 5 places. Monster Rosie Gray won the class with 3 first places, followed by Analee Hargreaves in 2nd and Rhys Cornfield in 3rd. East Kilbride Eagle Kirsty Meek prevented a similar 1 to 5 Monster result in the 4.5m class with a solid second place. The class was won by Monster Caitlin Sedgeworth with consistent first places, Kirsty in 2nd and Monster Fiona Huchison in 3rd.
The 5.5m class saw the old hands fighting back with Host Maniac Betty Buckman taking the honours with 3 wins, Monster Ali Sedgeworth in second and Barracuda Katie Beattie in 3rd. The 6.8m fleet was led home in spectacular style by Monster Ary-Jan Hoogebrugge, with Maniacs Michael Houston and Laura Sugden in 2nd and 3rd. The 6.8 Techno OD fleet honours were taken by brother and sister team Chris and Emma Dowson in 1st and 2nd and Jordan OHara in 3rd leading home an all Barracuda fleet. With 2 out of 3 zone wins this year, the Scottish Zone title was taken by reigning champions Clyde Barracudas, but the stars of the day were the Loch Insh Monsters; with 3 class wins, they came from nowhere to win their debut event. Many thanks to Alan at Monikie, Race Officer Iain Jackson and T15 Competition Organiser Robin Nicol (RYAS) Next year the Scottish zone steps up another gear with 8 teams in the running and the promise of a very competitive season. The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
