Event 3
Resounding Win for Team Astbury The round 2 event saw depleted teams from Astbury, and Hollingworth, so what would round 3 bring? Taking advantage of an early break from school due to the Golf Open the West Kirby Warriors were missing from this Astbury vs Manley Event. To their credit Team Astbury managed to field a very strong team of 14 sailors, 6 of them on the Zone Squad. Manley also did well to produce a full scoring team of 6 with Tom Christian and Rebecca Thompson making their first appearance in a competition. Again, we had some excellent hot weather which meant that, yet again, many of the sailors took to the water without wetsuits. The wind was unfortunately very light and shifty, and the decision was taken to get 3 quick downwind slaloms in just in case the wind failed completely. With the 6.8m sailors leading the way it was pleasing to see that everyone could get around the course although a grand prix finish was used for some of the slower 3.5m sailors. Rob Tarry (Team Astbury) had the biggest smile of the morning having taken his first wins ever in the Techno 6.8 fleet. After lunch a more challenging Box, sausage course was set for all the 6.8m sailors whilst simplicity stayed with the 5.5, 4.5 and 3.5m fleets with a box and a short upwind leg to finish. For the 6.8m fleet this proved to be more challenging than expected as Mikey Nickson led the other Zone Squad across the finish line only to find that they had missed the sausage out!!!!! For some of the 3.5m fleet the short upwind leg proved to be quite demanding and Katz sailors Xenia Spencer-Milnes and Caitlin Kennedy stayed on the water after finishing their races to coach, Tom and Rebecca to the finish – thats team spirit for you!! With 7 races and 2 discards the team scoring was quickly sorted. Team Astbury had 5 x 1sts and a 2nd which resulted in the score of just 7. The Manley Mere Katz did produce some real winners in terms of experience for a very new team. 23pts gave them 2nd. Thanks must go to Trish and her team at Manley for what was a highly efficient and rewarding event. So what does this do to the series? Well, it looks like 2005 all over again. The Warriors are in the lead as we go into the final round at West Zone Series Results

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
