Event 2 Venue: Hollingworth Lake Date: 1 July 2006
Event 2 The Warriors away win - again! Saturday July 1st was the day that the nation was glued to their TV sets, yet again as England took on Portugal. The other clash this weekend was another Windsurfing Grand Prix event which depleted Team Astbury, yet again.
What with Rugby matches and broken arms we eventually ended up with 20 keen sailors taking to the water from 4 Clubs and competing in all fleets except the 6.8 Techno.
The weather could not have been better. A solid force 2 to 3 and bright sunshine prompted some sailors to do away with wetsuits. Aided by the Hollingworth crew a large downwind slalom was set for all fleets with the 6.8 and 5.5m sailors going first. From the outset the Astbury vs Warriors duel was made very evident with Adie Cook and Jay Gwynn being the only sailors in that fleet. The 4.5 and 3.5m fleets followed on the same course with the Warriors sailors showing considerable dominance.
A short break for lunch prompted a change to the course to provide a little more challenge. Still using a slalom start the 3.5 and 4.5m were to sail a box course with an upwind finish whilst the other 2 fleets had to include an outer loop on their course. This worked well and I was pleased that everyone took on the challenge well. Who know next time we might have a go at an upwind start – get practicing!!! Zone Squad Coach, Ian Roberts called in to witness some good competition from the next batch of young windsurfers.
So what about the results after a cracking days sailing? Take a look and you will see something which is rarely seen. The winner of every fleet won every race!!!! This shows that if you get to know your equipment well you can achieve great results.
Creditworthy performances came from the Jonathan Milton the only Hollingworth Hunter yet again-he took 3rd in the 4.5m fleet. Joash Knight and Sam Coldham (West Kirby Warriors) won the 3.5 and 4.5m fleets. Zone Squad sailor Callum Stewart (Team Astbury) set himself a bit of a challenge by sailing in the larger 5.5m class on a Techno. He won every race! As for the Adie Cook vs Jay Gwynn battle – Jay did his utmost to beat Adie but he claims he ran out of races (or was he being a gentleman?)
Taking the Merit Trophies were Astbury sailors James Bloor and Jack Bailey. Both of these inexperienced youngsters, made the start of every race and stuck to the task well in not giving up – well done. The team results:-
1st West Kirby Warriors 10pts 2nd Team Astbury 18pts 3rd Manley Mere Katz 34pts 4th Hollingworth Hunters 43pts
Thanks must go to John, Gary and the support team at Hollingworth for their hard work before and on the day. Certainly, the on-water sport was just as (or even better?) than that on the TV!!! – dont mention England again!
So what will the next event at Manley bring? Are the West Kirby Warriors are all away on holiday? Can the Katz have a home win?

ADOPT-A-BEACH

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants.
Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
Adopt-a-Beach is definitely relevant to T15ers, which is a Marine Conservation Society project supported by the Green Blue.
