Event 1 Warriors win round 1!!
The strong, gusty wind conditions were to test both sailors and the race officer as a giant downwind slalom was set for the first race. The more experienced 6.8m sailors went first to lead the way followed the other fleets. From the outset the Team Astbury versus West Kirby Warriors duel was to continue from previous years along with other much improved performances from the Manley Mere Katz, Salford Sharks, Hollingworth Hunter(s) and Windermere Rufwinds. The second race for all the fleets was the same downwind slalom but with the wind picking up, some time was spent after the race by the safety team picking up sailors who had drifted downwind. With the pressure on to get a third race in before lunch a simple cross-wind sprint with just one gybe mark was set up. But all the best plans sometimes go wrong - and it did. A major wind shift on the return leg meant that many sailors had to finish on a beat to the line.
Lunch saw the usual photo call before a return to the water. Again the conditions dictated the racing with a repeat of the downwind slalom followed by a bit of a haul back to the start. As the final race was being run the football got was underway -
As the results processing got underway the Astbury and
Creditworthy performances came from the Manley Mere Katz who field a team of 6 with great results from Alistair Kennedy 2nd (3.5m class), Emily Guest 3rd (5.5m class) and Catlin Kennedy 4th (3.5m class). Jonathan Milton, the only Hollingworth Hunter, was ready to leave at mid-day with things going from bad to worse - he stuck it out though and took 3rd in the 4.5m fleet. Oliver Bradley-Baker (West Kirby Warriors) aged just 9 used a BiC Techno to win the 4.5m fleet - a great result for this Zone Squad sailor. Mickey Nickson (Team Astbury) had 5 straight wins in the 6.8m fleet as did Elliott Taylor (Team Astbury) in the 6.8m Techno fleet.
Alyssa Kay (Salford Sharks) was awarded the merit trophy for supporting her team sailors having completed her races. Tom Storr and Toby Huston (Windermere Rufwinds) shared the other merit trophy having travelled all the way from near
The team results:- 1st 2nd Team Astbury 12pts 3rd Manley Mere Katz 32pts 4th 5th Hollingworth Hunters 78pts 6th Windermere Rufwinds 87pts
At prize giving all the teams were able to admire the magnificent Eric Twiname Trophy won earlier this year by our Zone Squad sailors. With team15 supporting the Zone Squad the future looks great for all our young windsurfers.
Thanks must go to Ali Yates and the support team at Astbury for their hard work before and on the day. Certainly, the on-water sport was just as (or even better?) than that on the TV!!!
So what will the next event at Hollingworth bring? Team Astbury will be at full strength (yes, they had some team members away at a Grand Prix event) and looking for revenge. Will the West Kirby Warriors strike again? Will the Katz spoil the party? See you on July 1st. West Kirby Warriors

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
