Event 4
Axbridge take the series Richard Bruce had asked me if I wanted the club to provide anything for the event. I asked him to provide lots of clubbers and force 2-3 breeze. He got the breeze just right, not too much for the novice sailors but enough for the experienced boys and girls to have fun. As a warm up we had a quick paddle around 2 marks in fleets. Once the scorer had sorted the missing race vest numbers and clubs from the entry sheets we set a triangle course for the first race. The cross shore wind was good for beach starts and with the first mark on the far side of the lake there was a long beam reach for the first leg. Mark 2 was set to windward which caused a log jam as the 5.5m and 6.8m fleets caught up with the 3.5s. Many of the novice sailors were lapped by the experienced, locals like Richard Bruce, Rachael Ince and Aleks Sedgwick-Wilde. There were close battles all the way through the fleets. 3.5m sailors Laurel Townsend and Barny Beauchamp were never more than a few metres apart while in the 4.5m fleet, Sean Treacy and Rosie Hodgeson swapped 1st and 2nd places except when newcomer James Diamond won race three. Wimbleball Wombles filled most of the places in the 3.5m fleet as this new club started from scratch this year. Their Club Coach, Liz, started the Tamar Tigers club 3 years ago and moulded them into a winning team. Can she do the same with the Wombles? I think she can! Croft Farm are getting better with each event after 2 lean years while the Durleigh Devils can be proud of their performance at their home event. With SCOEC unable to send 6 competitors and having to take 3 maximum scores, they did well to score 1, 3 and 5 points with their sailors. Wimbleball suffered from lack of sailors in the larger sail sizes. The three other clubs gave us the closest finish of all thee events ever sailed in the South West zone. Team Scores were Axbridge Animals are the Zone Champions with 4 team wins. Other places are: Croft Farm 2nd; SCOEC 3rd; Waterland Wonders 4th; Wimbleball Wombles 5th; Durleigh Devils 6th.

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
