Notice of Race: event 2
One thing was missing, well actually 2 things were missing - the wind and the starting flags. Typically Clyde had left them at home (starting flags that is, not the wind). Still, there were plenty of other flags to use and with plenty of assistants the event ran like a well-oiled clock. The mornings racing was a mixture of paddling and pumping. One end of the beach was shouting not to paddle, the other end to paddle. Somewhere in the middle the racers were not so sure what to do, so consequently that race was scrapped for the 3.5m fleet. The rest of the fleets had managed to get around the course without paddling so kept the result.
The absence of wind meant a leisurely lunch till the sea breeze finally made its way to Bewl Reservoir. The race officer and his merry assistants of Claire, Jill, Andy and the many parents were on the ball straight away and got the second race off to a flying boat start. Despite some confusion on the start line, the usual suspects made their way to the front of the fleets. It was a battle for 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the 4.5m fleet between Casper Jones, Roland Sims (both Bewl Blasters) and Charlie Wilson (Aquasports Aquanaut) as Sam Conroy of Hythe Hotshots in the 4.5m fleet once again won all of his races. Barring one discard so did Stuart Hards of the same club in the 5.5m fleet. Glen Sullivan (Danson Park) was his nearest challenge, Glen is getting the hang of course racing, but still prefers to put some heli tacks and sailspins into his racing; surely a Super X star in the making! Caroline Gittins ever consistent performances put her into 3rd place and top girl for the Blasters.
The 3.5m fleet saw a much more mixed result, and with many new faces combined with the short course it was hard to pick the way through the fleet. Conor Wells of Aquasports fought really hard, despite some bad starts (by his standard). He left it down to the last race to finally take first place. He was pushed all the way by Fredo Edwards of Hythe Hotshots and Nicolas Bone of Aquasports. Only 3 points separated the top 3. It was great to see so much hard work put in by the newcomers. Catriona Hards and Dani Conroy were particularly determined in their first outing representing the Hotshots. So, onto the big guys, or should I say big sails? The 6.8m fleet were made to do the most laps on the biggest course to keep the troublesome lot out of the way! Jack Brooks of Hythe Hotshots is racing in the Open Fleet, whilst Sam Latham also of Hythe is racing in the Techno Fleet. These two won their races respectively, despite Jack sailing to the wrong buoy a few times. Rowley Jones (Blasters) in Open Fleet and Rupert Munro Faure (Blasters) in Techno Fleet are both showing masses of improvement to dutifully collect second overall.
With our biggest turnout ever - 34 participants - we also had some of the closest racing. Bewl Windsurfing were once again excellent hosts, and as has become customary, after the prize-giving served out a massive plate of sausage and chips to everyone. Hythe Hotshots took team honours for the second time this season, despite the competition from Bewl, Danson and Aquasports, the latter of whom will host the next event on the 9th July. See you there!

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
