Keith Atkinson currenlty holds the title of UK Formula Windsurfing Champion and has become the first ever T15 Ambassador. In this role Keith attended the inaugral T15 Champions Cup in October to present the trophies to up and coming stars of the future.

How old were you when you started windsurfing?
I was six years old.

What made you want to start windsurfing?
My dad encouraged me to start windsurfing as soon as he thought I was strong enough to hold up a sail. I watched videos of professional windsurfers and I wanted to be able to do what they did.

What equipment do you sail?
I use Neilpryde RS6 sails for both formula and slalom. The boards I use are Starboard Formula 160, sonic 85 and i-sonic's 105 & 125.

When and where did you start competing?
I started racing when I was 11 on holiday, then I came home and I couldn't wait to race at my local club. I waited until I was about 14 before I started to race regionally and nationally. The only thing I regret is not competing at a higher level sooner. When you race with people that are better than you are on the water there is always something to aim for and this helps you improve and it motivates you to aim to beat them.

What is your best result and the one you are most proud of?
My best result so far is for sure my win at the Euro Cup in Silvaplana.

What is your training schedule like?
I'm training 5 days a week in the gym when I'm in the UK and if there's wind when I'm at home, then I'm on the water 2-3 days a week and the days I don't sail I go to the gym instead. I have a personal trainer (fit to perform) which is really motivating me to become stronger and healthier. I have the mind set and dedication to achieve my goals of a European and world title, so a strong mind needs a strong body. To give me the best possible chance to reach my goals I need to work hard for it and give myself any possible advantages over the competition.

What windsurfers do you socialize with during training and events?
During training sessions I take it seriously and have specific training partners that I work with like Andrea Cucchi or Wojtek Brzozowski. I have a lot of friends on the racing circuit that I will socialize with in the evenings after racing. There are big groups of people that gather and it's really easy to join in and have a great time.

Tell us some gossip on two well-known windsurfers!
Greg King once drove into a brick wall thinking he was in reverse. Dan Ellis studied hairdressing at college.

Best windsurfing moment ever?
The first time I made the board move where I wanted it to go. I was so happy!

Scariest moment?
Seeing a shark at Kanaha (Maui) whilst wave sailing, I didn't stick around believe me!

ADOPT-A-BEACH

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants.

Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.

Adopt-a-Beach is definitely relevant to T15ers, which is a Marine Conservation Society project supported by the Green Blue.
