David McKay was voted Cool Coach by the East Kilbride T15 Clubbers on the message board. This is what Anna had to say:
'Davie is the instructor at James Hamilton Heritage Park in East Kilbride. He is the best instructor because he is a kool guy, he wears cool clothes, he's good on his board (so good in fact he doesnt wear a wetsuit!!) and he coaches the best looking team in Scotland (E.K. Eagles) (Anna, Mhairi and Kathleen, to name but a few.)

He is such a funny guy apart from when he does accents, which could he please STOP!!!!! please? Soo...he is the best instructor, but if you're reading this Davie, dont let your head get too big!!!!'
So since David is this month's Cool Coach, here is a bit more info about him...
How many years have you been windsurfing? 14 years.
Where do you windsurf yourself? Anywhere, but Troon mostly.
What kit do you sail? Mistral Flow 276, Mistral Ecstasy 256, Gun / Neil Pryde wave sails.
Best windsurfing moment? First planing moment on my level one windsurfing course at the National Watersports Centre on Cumbrae. I was fairly maxed out on a medium length long board when "woody" my instructor shouted "kick the dagger up!" It has been full speed ahead since then. I was only 16.
Favourite place you have ever windsurfed - UK & abroad? ? UK - Tiree for sure. Abroad - on honeymoon in the Dominican Republic.
Who or what has inspired you the most? In my early windsurfing days, videos of Robby Naish and co. doing their stuff inspired me most. Now, trying to stay at least one step ahead of the kids in the team 15 squad inspires me to don the wetsuit.
How long have you been an RYA instructor? Roughly 7 years.
What motivated you to become and instructor? Basically the same as what motivates most people who do what I do. Getting pleasure from enabling others to experience what I have been lucky enough to experience and also to try to provide a set-up where others can improve and surpass what I have done with an ethos of eventually passing that on to others. And so the cycle goes on and on.
What's the biggest buzz about instructing? Satisfaction of seeing people learning about the sport and themselves.
Have you had any other careers? Where would you like me to start? Full time lecturer in sport and recreation at Anniesland College in Glasgow, windsurfing instructor at East Kilbride, part-time football coach, ski instructor – all of which are current!
Any hidden talents outside of windsurfing? Play guitar.
Any other hobbies? Skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, anything semi-extreme.
Alive or dead, who would you most like to meet? ? Martin Luther King – just to gain a glimpse of some of the hardships that were experienced at that time in America and to find out how hard it was to stand up for what was right.
Any top tips for T15 clubbers? Spend as much time on the water as you can, save all your pocket money to buy your own gear (even if you start with a harness), tell all your friends how cool the sport and your local centre is and have fun with your mates
Finally, whats the best thing for you about team15? Finally, money is being aimed as grass roots windsurfing. The more people we get windsurfing, especially at early ages, the greater chances we have of becoming world champions. T15 is creating a scene at many locations and is serving its purpose of retaining people in the sport. That can only be a good thing. |
