Event 3 Madness at Monikie
The last T15 event of the season was a first for the Monikie Maniacs in terms of hosting an event - and what a great job they did. The forecast for the Saturday looked windy and true to form a 20mph wind arrived, making for an interesting day. Race officer for the day Robin Nicol worked closely with the team coaches to consider what courses the racers would manage in these gusty conditions. Even though it looked calm from the beach and the sun was shining, out on the water it was wild and windy. Who's that in the water?!
The Clyde Barracudas where looking to secure their third win in the series and gain a comprehensive victory to take the series trophy. Would this happen?
The first race of the day proved to be interesting as the wind made it very difficult for the competitors to even hold their spot on the start line. The sailors struggled with the circuit as the wind seemed relentless. Those who got round had a huge smile of satisfaction at completing race; the result came second on their list…
As the day progressed it was apparent that the wind was not going to relent from its ballistic force so a change of tact was agreed with a new course being set out. The new course saw a more sheltered start line and a simple sausage race. All looked good until the racers reached the really windy wind line and again those that completed the race where extremely satisfied just to have got round.
A short break for lunch was well received; competitors took the opportunity to grab a bite to eat but ultimately to relax and discuss their windswept morning.
Racing resumed in the afternoon with a shift of the course due to the weather - it was not getting any better! Two more races were held in the afternoon but the windy conditions had taken their toll on the competitors who where exhausted. The judges and safety boat drivers by this point were in the same condition due to the constant battering from the wind so racing was declared over - not just for the day, but for the 2005 T15 season as well.
Monikie Maniacs produced some great results on the day with the young Russel Turner consistently battling the conditions to take the 4.5m fleet and Betty Buckman taking the 5.5m fleet. The last event of the year proved to be very successful, and a fitting end to the 2005 season with many young sailors being determined to come back to Monikie in 2006 and conquer the high wind venue.
At the events ceremony special thanks were paid to East Kilbride Eagles head coach David Mckay who was retiring from his T15 coaching role. An emotional presentation was given to him by the Eagles team. And just to make sure that David did not forget them he was duly dunked it the loch. Big thanks to David for all his hard work over the past few years.
Ah, it was David McKay! The teams and coaches would like to thank their great The teams and coaches would like to thank their great host of the day - Monikie Country Park - and all the support staff who helped in the running of the event. Thanks also to team sponsors Tushingham Sails (East Kilbride Eagles) and Bic Sport (Clyde Barracudas), along with Sailrepair for donating prizes and a special thanks to Boardwise for providing a huge pile of stickers.
See you in 2006 for some more madcap racing! Winning team

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
