Event 3 Warriors Slim Win!!! Three quick downwind giant slalom races involving gybes at 5 marks were held for each fleet. The 6.6m fleet went first and as predicted Jay Gwynn (West Kirby Warriors) and Luke Bungenaar (TeamAstbury) resumed their usual battle. This time however Jay had borrowed a Raceboard which matched the performance of Luke's IMCO. It was unfortunate that Andy Redfern (Hollingworth Hunters) had to concede that his board was no match for these two. As each fleet set off it was noticeable that standards had improved since the last event with many sailors arriving at the marks within a matter of a few seconds of each other. It was then a case of take care getting around the mark and then race off to the next buoy. In the 5.5m fleet Callum Stewart (TeamAstbury) and in the 4.5m fleet Chris Charasse (West Kirby Warriors) had sorted the tactics out and recorded a string of 1sts. In the 3.5m fleet things were a little more unpredictable with a number of pile-ups at some of the marks. (Perhaps coaches need to encourage sailors to stay out of trouble at marks rather than going for gaps which dont exist?). After a brief lunchbreak the sun was still with us and more importantly so was the wind – ideal for 4 more races for each fleet. To provide a bit more of a challenge a three-mark down wind slalom was set up with a 75m beat to the finish line. This created lots of interest from the spectators and places were readily exchanged as sailors approached the finish (fast tacking - another area to work on?). At the prize giving the crowd waited patiently for the results whilst Ian Roberts (Zone Coach) gave a brief explanation of the qualification procedure for selection into the Zone Squad - look out for more information on this (on the results sheet Zone Squad sailors are marked with a (Z)) - how did you do? In the 6.6m fleet Luke Bungenaar added to his collection of 1st place trophies but conceded that this was his last event as he will shortly be celebrating his 16th Birthday. Luke has attended every T15 Inter-Club Event - well done Luke. As each sailor came up to collect their trophies it was evident that everyone was trying to work out who would take the team trophy. Not easy as 5 out of the 6 clubs had sailors taking a 1st, 2nd or 3rd!! Before awarding the Team trophy we identified 2 sailors who had caught our eye during the day. Charlotte Cannon (Windermere Rufwinds) and Tom Smith (West Kirby Warriors) were presented with trophies for their efforts - well done. So who won the Team Trophy? Look below - only 3 points separated West Kirby and Astbury!! - great drama. Team Results As we go into Event 4 at Astbury the same big question is - can the West Kirby Warriors holdout with the pressure from TeamAstbury? Could the Hollingworth Hunters spoil the party? The Team Series Winners will be decided at this last event of the season!!! Remember results from the 4th event will mean that a discard comes into play. Getting exciting or what? Make sure that you are there. Thanks must go to our hosts for the day - Mike and Jane Holbrooke - Sailsports Manley, Trish Melton (Coach - Manley Mere Katz) and all the people she enlisted to help the event run so smoothly. Foot note - A number of sailors were missing from this event having gone on holiday early (lucky for some!) - perhaps we could break last years record of 46 at our next event? The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
