Event 2 Revenge for TeamAstbury
The day started somewhat depressingly - warm, sunny weather is great but if the wind doesnt arrive, it can be very frustrating - a maximum of 2 to 3 knots was forecast. 34 sailors from six clubs signed on and surprisingly, despite the forecast, we did have some wind. Being aware that the expected sea breeze could cancel out the light prevailing winds, four quick downwind giant slalom races were held for each fleet. The 6.6m fleet went first and produced some interesting results. Unlike previous events where a single sailor appeared to dominate, this fleet was wide open with all five sailors having top 3 places. In the 4.5m and 3.5m fleets the experience of some sailors was evident though a number of new sailors to T15 events were showing the way.
As if by magic, the wind started to fill so a quick lunch break was taken. The sun was out and so were the windsurfers. With such great conditions we had the makings of a great spectacle. Watching from the promenade the coaches, parents and general public could not help being impressed by the standard of sailing. Because we raced one fleet at a time it was noticeable that encouragement came from other team members as well as parents. At one stage, I was thinking that I was at a football match!!! To give 7 races with 2 discards, a short upwind finish was added to the downwind slalom. This became even more challenging for the newcomers and it was evident that this is an area which coaches can work on. What was impressive was the determination of some competitors to finish with the short upwind section taking as long as the across wind racing.
The results confirmed just how good the Zone Squad sailors are with everyone scoring top 3 places particularly in the 6.6m and 5.5m fleets. What was encouraging however was that in some fleets sailors at their first event had success; for example Adam Purcell (TeamAstbury) and Sam Coldham (Wirral Warriors) were 1st and 2nd in the 3.5m fleet. In the team results TeamAsbury could not be beaten with 4x1st and 2x2nds. Salford, Manley, Hollingworth and Windermere all had problems with producing a full team (would Sunday be a better day for Inter-Club Competitions? - Mike)
All photos courtesy of TeamAstbury As we go into Event 3 at Manley the big question is – can the Wirral Warriors holdout with the pressure from TeamAstbury? Could the Hollingworth Hunters just sneak in? Getting exciting or what? Team winners Current Overall Results (after 2 events)

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
