Event 4
Sunday 21 August 2005
Roadford Watersports Centre, nr Okehampton

Roadford Revisited
Due to blue-green algae at Tamar Lakes the fourth event in the SWs T15 Inter-club series was moved at short notice to Roadford - yet this did not affect the numbers attending. 32 clubbers registered and then sat impatiently waiting for the wind!

The first two races as a warm up were a mixture of paddle and sail; one person sails a board whilst another clubber paddles a second board - and just to make life more fun the two boards are tied together. The Tamar Tigers duo consisting of Will Pepworth and Adam West convincingly won race 1, followed by Liam Green and Aleks Sedgwick-Wilde representing the Roadford Wreckers. Charlie Winn and Stephan Clarke continued the winning line-up for the Tigers in race 2.

A change in format saw a slalom event set for the third race of the day. Sailing was very tight but eventually Duncan Bryan (Roseland Wave Riders) took first place followed by Adam West (Tigers) and Sam Sills (Roadford Wreckers) who had recently returned from the World Championships in Poland. Lunch followed with everyone watching with baited breath for Geoff to provide the entertainment again - but he resisted the temptation. Shame!

A different course again for race four; the buoys were set - a beach start and broad reach to the first mark made for an exciting race. Duncan Bryan and Jack Warren of the Wave Riders took first and second places respectively, followed by the Tiger known as Adam West.

The last race of the day was a set with a line start on the water. The start was the best I have seen in a long time; these clubbers are really getting good. Duncan Bryan once again took first place for the Wave Riders, followed Adam West and Charlie Winn from Tamar.

Results were compiled, T15 coaches were consulted and the event's special trophies were awarded to Tom Hellier (Stithians Allstars) for determination and to Victoria Forrest-Mitchell (Tigers) for perseverance. The sponsors Neilson, Tushingham and Bic were thanked for their continued support, whilst the winning team were celebrating. Three wins out of four give the Tamar Tigers the Series Win and a place at the Champions Cup in October.

A special event is organized in the south west, which brings together the SWn and the SWs in a challenge event. This takes place at Wimbleball Sailing Club on 10th September - our money is with the SWs…let’s show them!

ADOPT-A-BEACH

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants.

Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.

Adopt-a-Beach is definitely relevant to T15ers, which is a Marine Conservation Society project supported by the Green Blue.
