Event 3 Roseland Sail & Paddle, nr St Mawes Sunday 31 July 2005
Roseland Rule at Home
| Twenty competitors turned up near St Mawes to enter event 3 in the SWs T15 inter-club series, hosted by Roseland Paddle & Sail. With marks to lay, a briefing to conduct and data to be entered into the computer, time was short. |
| Thanks to host Bob Warren and T15 CO for the SWn zone, Geoff Pook, many hands made light work. Bob had his older sailors (non-competitors) well briefed and organised to assist in the running of the event so whilst Bob took charge of running the 3.5m novice fleet, Geoff, assisted by coach Marianne and instructor Liz, ran the larger course. Brenton West had agreed to take care of all the photos which meant that with so much support, the T15 CO could sit back a bit and watch the action for a change; the only duty was to take control of the scoring.
Race 1 got off to a flying start with a warm-up paddle race. The Roseland Wave Riders (BiC) took advantage of their local knowledge and took first place in all but the 4.5m fleet, the string of bullets being broken by Dexter West of the Tamar Tigers. Jack and Nat Warren were first home in the 5.5m and 3.5m fleets with Duncan Bryan taking the honours in the 6.6m fleet.

Race 2 got the clubbers sailing after their warm-up race. A triangle-sausage-triangle course was set for the experienced clubbers, with a cross-wind course for the less experienced sailors. It was a real treat to be able to watch the racing from the shore; the standard of sailing seems to improve with each event. Duncan Bryan was leading the race for the Wave Riders but was closely followed by Richard Walker (on holiday but representing the Tigers) who wasnt letting Duncan have an easy time of it in the 6.6m fleet; some clubbers are so keen they even take their race kit on holiday! | Jack Warren (Roseland) was working hard to keep his first place in the 5.5m fleet and was chased by fellow clubber Ewan Sinclair for second place. On the cross-wind course Christian Body was putting in a talented performance for the Stithians Allstars, chased by the rest of the Roseland pack.
Two races down and time for lunch…plus a bit of unplanned entertainment to complement the activities in the north on the day before. To explain: as south west clubbers are aware Geoff and myself (Ady Davies) work together to organise and run the T15 events in both the north and the south of the zone. On Saturday at the SWn event, Geoff stepped out of his boat into what he thought was knee deep water; he would have been right if he were a giraffe but as he is human and short, waist deep water was more the scene. This not being enough, to keep things on an even keel for both zones Geoff then provided entertainment at Roseland by pulling up the anchor and falling out of the boat - into over-head height water!!! Thanks for the entertainment Geoff.
| After the entertainment and a quick bite to eat another 2 races were held on the same course, both extremely well-sailed especially with the tide bringing in the need for the best tactics in choosing the right course and lay lines. As a spectator it was great to be able to watch the action so near to shore with the racing extremely close between most of the fleets. |
| Ian Jameson (one of the SW Zone Squad Coaches) was on holiday at Roseland and took time to watch the event. Ian was extremely impressed with the standard of sailing but I think a little worried also as to the amount of people who are more than ready to joint the zone squads - places will be hard fought for this year I reckon. T15 is doing its stuff and feeding the system.

To finish the day's activities a long distance race was organised which took up most of the possible sailing area. I think the course even took in part of St Mawes on its way but once again the clubbers fought for places to the last possible second; for some the finish came just in time and for others another 10 meters could have made such a difference. After five races, some great action and superb sailing, on home waters the Roseland Wave Riders took to the podium and were declared event winners. |
The prizes were presented by Marianne Bryan, team coach for the home team, and Bob Warren (owner of Roseland Paddle and Sail) was thanked for hosting the event and making life so easy for the event organiser. Finally the team15 sponsors - Neilson, Tushingham and Bic - were also thanked for their continued support of these events.

And so to event 4, the last in the 2005 series - can Tamar be beaten? Can Roseland rush in with a last minute bid to steal the Tiger's glory to win the series team trophy and a place at the Champions Cup? We cant wait - but will have to... |

ADOPT-A-BEACH

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants.
Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
Adopt-a-Beach is definitely relevant to T15ers, which is a Marine Conservation Society project supported by the Green Blue.
