Event 2
Sunday 26 June 2005
Roadford Watersports Centre, nr Okehampton

Great commitment in the south west...

Sunday morning arrived and we found ourselves at a windy, sunny and very busy Roadford Lake; as well as our T15 inter-club event, a sailing club was having an away weekend, a dinghy championship was scheduled and the usual Sunday morning club-races were due to take place. Despite all this commotion, the staff at Roadford managed to provide the T15 race officer with a nice room to complete the registration and scoring.

So after much putting up of flags, laying out trophies and trying to keep the door open, registration was underway. The first thing noticed was that the Stithians Allstars (sponsored by Neilson) had improved their team numbers significantly - if this keeps up the Allstars will be a force to be reckoned with, giving the more established clubs a run for their money very soon. Almost a full turn-out of clubs and 16 competitors was a great result for the south west(s) zone; travelling to events in this part of the world is difficult at the best of times, so commitment was certainly shown by all who attended – great!

Due to the lake being so busy the first race was a butterfly rescue around the headland into the bay so that we were safe and out of the way of all the dinghies. Katherine Muller of the Tamar Tigers won the 3.5 fleet closely followed by Kate Murray, whilst Felicity Isaacs (Roadford Wreckers) was first in the 4.5 fleet and overall winner.

Race 2 was a slalom event using a figure-of-eight course and really tested the clubbers and their kit. The Tamar Tigers in their yellow race vests dominated this race with Adam West taking first place; Craig Langmead (Stithians Allstars) broke the flow and came home in second place, followed by a rush of yellow in the next three places whilst Felicity Isaacs was the first Wrecker home in 6th place.

Race 3 was almost a repeat of race 2 but Charlie and Jamie Winn (Tigers) showing what caring brothers they are by changing positions, in 4th and 5th places. Race 4 saw Craig Langmead of the Allstars getting into his stride and gybing his IMCO for all he was worth which gained him first place just beating Adam West into second place. Further down the fleet Nat Warren of the Roseland Wave Riders (Bic) moved up the fleet into 5th place. Just before lunch race 5 got underway; this was another exciting slalom with positions changing radically lower down the scores as a large tangle of boards and rigs appeared on buoy 2.

Following lunch the slalom courses were swapped for course racing as the wind had dropped a little and a rather large course was laid to test the skills of all the sailors. Craig Langmead used the straight line speed of his IMCO to great advantage and developed a healthy lead with Adam West fighting to close all the way to the finish line. Meanwhile, Dexter West, Charlie Winn and his brother Jamie were fighting for the third place with Dexter just managing to get the right line and the position.

Finally, the last race of the day was almost a repeat of the previous course but the difference being the finish line was now at the jetty. Once again Craig Langmead proved that he is going to be a force to reckoned with at regional racing; he was closely followed by Charlie Winn in second place who was just getting used to his new IMCO, whilst Adam West came a very creditable third and worked hard all the way to the finish.

The trophies were presented by the host club T15 coach and the sponsors were thanked - Neilson, Tushingham and Bic. A special mention was also made to the T15 coaches who have worked extremely hard to get their clubs going and to such a high standard of sailing (within a relatively short period of time); the courses and conditions today would have tested a lot of adults who have been sailing for some time, so well done to all sixteen sailors and there coaches.

The team trophy for event 2 was presented to the Tamar Tigers who managed to get at least one sailor in each fleet, which worked tactically, but as a team sailed very well.

ADOPT-A-BEACH

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants.

Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.

Adopt-a-Beach is definitely relevant to T15ers, which is a Marine Conservation Society project supported by the Green Blue.
