Event 3 Bosworth reign again; can anyone beat them?
As it was light wind, the race officer set a bit of a technical course with all sorts of side winding gybes and chicanes. The first gybe mark was placed in front of the café and the race officer was half expecting the fleet to forget the gybe and go and order lunch, but again they all stuck to the task! There has been some superb coaching and training going on within the clubs recently. All sailors sailed the course amazingly and many learnt how to sail a downwind course. Many sailors have also moved up from the 3.5m fleet to the 4.5m since the last event. Well done to all in that fleet especially Becky Bradley (Bullets), who sailed superbly all day (whilst feeling ill) to gain points for her team. Also Anne Loveday (Rutland Rockets), in her first inter-club challenge, gained a very respectable fifth place. The podium places were tight as ever. Current 4.5m champ was Mark Arrowsmith (Bullets), he had to try and hold off Zac King (Bullets) and Kieran Martin (Carsington Force XV). Just like the last event it came down to the last race, Kieran and Zac were both on the same points with Mark one point behind. The tension was so great the race officer decided to expand the start line to make sure all got off the line safely. In the end the experienced Zac from Bosworth Bullets (sponsored by Neilson) made it over first.
Josh Leadbetter (Bullets) was once again the winner of the 5.5 m fleet. George Riach (Carsington) is slowly following his brothers footsteps to guaranteed lifelong stardom after a superb second place. Best freestyle on the finish line went to Theo Hempshall (Carsington); Theo was definitely looking out for the camera at every opportunity and is so desperate to get in the press he brought his own stylist with him to make sure he was looking tip top. His stylist turned out to be his mum and made him 'style' the windsurfing kit back into the van so Theo could get back home for his tea. A special mention needs to go to Lindsay Smith from Bosworth for a superb effort, the only girl in the big sail fleets at the moment. The main 6.6 open fleet was rejuvenated with some exciting talent in the form of Sam Buckby from Rutland, Matt Staples from Carsington and Matt Yeates also from Rutland. Poor old Matt Staples had to endure the constant banter between the two Rutland boys by showing them how it's done with three firsts and two seconds. Once Sam Buckby had figured out which way to go through the start line it was nearly tea time but made up for his disastrous starts by sailing extremely cleverly around the course always seeming to take the best line. Sam went home the winner and to another evening of making his family watch 'Dr Beats Windurfing Karmasutra'. Well done to Matt Yeates for his recent form which he achieved through windsurfing 24 hours a day for the last two weeks. Due to the generosity of our equipment sponsor Boardwise, every racer had a prize to take home. Many thanks to our current club sponsors Neilson, Bic Sport and Tushingham and also the parents for getting the racers to the start line on time. Thanks also to Lucy Bukby for her efforts during the event and Rutland Watersports for a superb day. See you all at Bosworth on September 17th for the final event in the T15 inter-club zone series. The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
