Event 2 Record turnout of teams compete A beginner fleet was run off the beach allowing complete novices to have a go. Phoebe was tasked to run this fleet and was seen pulling her hair out as the sailors turned around the buoy in the exact opposite way to which she wanted; they would tack whenever she shouted 'gybe' and gybe whenever tacking was mentioned! Polite words could also be heard coming from the buoy: 'You first round the buoy Chloe' and 'No, you first round the buoy, Robyn'. Far too polite for the wider world of windsurfing competition so Fraser Burns (Carsington Force XV) seized the advantage and took gold. Back on the beach Phoebe had to instil the concept of T15 challenges - that whilst sportsmanship is good, you also want to beat your opponent. Chloe Jones is now on a mission to be 3.5 champion at event three at Rutland. Congratulations to Lorna Restall of the Chase Aces for competing and achieving a well-earned 1st place in the last race. The 3.5 fleet was extremely competitive; 4 out of the 5 in the fleet managed to get at least one first place throughout the day. In addition Rutland Rockets grommet Charly Sissons showed a steady improvement during the day and was even found intimidating the 5.5m fleet by getting to the start line first for race 6. Charly will be a superb sailor in the future. The competition was so close that the winner would be declared from the last race. The tension was unbearable and could be felt as far away as the café, resulting in Henry Jones's chips getting burnt! The capacity crowd of about 26 supporters erupted in applause as the sailors approached the finish. Well done to Holly Taylor and Hannah Wisdish (Carsington Force XV) for a splendid performance and congratulations to Rutland marvel Lauren Edwards for holding her nerve to win the fleet. Other improvers were William Wills from Rutland who showed his potential by going from 11th in the first race of the 4.5 fleet to 5th in the second. Also, Bosworth Bullets Becky Bradley and Carsingtons Emily Howard sailed excellently, both improving race by race. Mark Arrowsmith (Bullets) sailed like he had been on a Kieran Martin training day, showing unbelievable fitness and a desire to win, which could not be matched. He was even receiving mental coaching from his mentor Zac King before the race but after a few minutes of usual garbage from Zac, Mark realised his mistake and was unable to take anymore nonsense from the chatterbox; Mark raced into the sunset and took 4 first places and an overall win. Zac's voice can still be heard in many sailors' ears, often making sleeping difficult! The 5.5m fleet loved the windy conditions and sailed a two-lap race for 4 of the races. Well done to all the fleet that, despite getting tired, battled on through the pain barrier. Prior to racing all the fleet had to remember the words what doesn't kill you makes you stronger'. As a consequence, they will be given the marathon course to do at Rutland! Well done to Jack Straw (Notts County Outlaws) and Jack O Byrne (Carsington Force XV) for their perseverance against strong opposition, also Josh Leadbetter from the aptly names Bosworth Bullets for the 7 bullets in a row. Once again big thanks to our major sponsors Neilson, Tushingham and Bic. Also to our local sponsors Boardwise, Nobles and Midlands Sails and not forgetting a special thanks to all the parents for their commitment. See you at Rutland on 9 July. The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
