Event 3 Winning Team
Warriors fight to third victory Team Astbury hosted the third event of the RYAs Team15 (T15) inter-club series on their home waters near Congleton, Cheshire, on Saturday 19 July. As reigning national champions, Astbury were desperate to hold off their rivals West Kirby Warriors, who had won both events so far this year. Another win for West Kirby and it would be curtains for the champs. The two rival teams were joined by the up and coming young team, the Manley Mere Katz, and the three teams mustered a healthy 33 competitors for the contest. Gusty winds and a mix of rain and sunshine made for exciting conditions as the youngsters went through their heats, sailing on a mix of Giant Slaloms and Mini Olympic courses. Biggest class was the 3.5 meter boards with eleven competitors. Rebecca Thompson became the only girl to win a class, taking three wins to get the Manley Mere Katz off to an ideal start, from West Kirbys Isaac Bradley Baker in second. A young surfer from the Manley team then made it two class wins, taking the 4.5m class to show that Manley are a team for the future. Manleys Thomas Bulkeley took this class by just two points from Astburys Edward Vardle. West Kirby Warriors asserted themselves in the 5.5m and 6.8 m classes, with Oliver Bradley Baker and Sam Coldham taking a one- two in the 5.5m class, while in the 6.8meters their team mate Charlie Lloyd took five race wins for a comfortable win from Richard Wardle of Astbury. The Techno 6.8 class was the scene for the tightest contest, as Astburys Adam Purcell edged out West Kirbys Joash Knight by just a single point. The event attracted a wide mix of ages, and two of the youngest surfers, Henry Bloor (age 7, Astbury) and Oliver Eastwood (age 9, West Kirby) gained well deserved Merit awards. The results gave West Kirby their third event win on the trot, and they have secured the series with an event to go. Team Astbury, who have enjoyed a five year reign as local champs, fought hard, but had to settle for second place just three points behind the Warriors, while Manley did wonders with small resources. Of just four Manley surfers in the contest, two won their classes, and these were the events biggest classes at that. The final inter-club of the season will be at Manley in September, while the West Kirby Warriors can also look forward to representing the West Zone later this year at the T15 Champions Cup in October.
