Event 4 Winning Team OXFORD ZOOMERS MAKE IT TO THE CUP Despite a valiant effort on Saturday (13th September) from Poole based Team15 (T15) team the Academy All Stars, claiming the last event victory of the season, Farmoor's Oxford Zoomers secured their place at the Champions Cup final and the title South Regional Team15 Champion for the third year running. The south's teams, the Oxford Zoomers, the Queen Mary Skimmers from Staines, the Academy All Stars from Poole and the Calshot Flyers from Southampton, were tested against each other in very light air conditions at the All Stars home waters FC Watersports in Sandbanks, Poole. Racing took place, as always at T15 events, across five windsurfing classes, the 3.5m, 4.5m, 5.5m, 6.8m and Bic Techno 6.8m. Saturday's event was the first ever win for the Academy All Stars, after several years of settling for being runners up, which added to the excitement of their success. Every skill was needed to negotiate the light breezes, and 5 short races were held in the afternoon, with all classes starting together. Individual winners included Ella Milne (11) from Poole in the 3.5m, Guy Dixon (14) from Farmoor in the 4.5m, Steve Law (14) from Poole in the 5.5m, Chloe Hopgood (15) from Farmoor in the 6.8m and Anthony Milton (13) from Poole in the 6.8 Techno. Poole's Ella Milne in particular showed her skills when she managed to beat all the other larger classes as she sailed her 3.5m through the fleet to come first across the finish line. The prizes were presented by Olympic bronze medallist Bryony Shaw, just back from Beijing, and Nick Baker, six times world indoor windsurfing champion. Dozens of onlookers gathered to share the excitement of the young windsurf teams in their thrill of meeting their champion idols. The event enjoyed a record turnout. In the 3.5m class there were 17 competitors, the most ever at a south zone T15 Event, and 15 competitors in the 4.5m class, also a south zone record. T15 South Zone Co-ordinator Chris Lewis said "It is fantastic to see the T15 events building in popularity year after year. So many kids are benefitting from this scheme to get them on the water, and this year is a very good testament to its success." Saturday's event saw the completion of four rounds of regional heats from which the winners go through to the T15 Champions' Cup National Final to be held at Rutland Water on 4/5 October 2008. |

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
