Event 3
Winning Team Covenham Cyclones crush the opposition The RYA North Zone Team15 Windsurfing Championship was thrown wide open on Sunday 31st August when a determined team from the Covenham Cyclones crushed the opposition on home waters.
With everything to play for, the event attracted competitors from around the region, all hoping to do well for their team, whether it be the Cyclones or their competitors Pugneys Pirates, the North Lincs Invaders or the new team on the block, the Derwent Devils (who are awaiting T15 recognition and sailed as individual sailors at this event).
Despite a frustrating lack of wind, some competitive races were held in the afternoon in a swirling, shifting breeze that tested the skill and endurance of the young windsurfers to the limit.
Nine year old Harry Davis from Barton upon Humber (Nth Lincs Invaders) was outstanding with five wins out of six races in the 3.5m fleet. This score was only topped by 15 yr old Jack Maw from Louth who won every race in the 6.8m fleet for the Covenham Cyclones. Another fantastic achievement came from 12yr old Robert York from Skegness who won three races out of four in the 5.5m class.
In all it was a great day for the windsurfers from Humberside with wins in the two junior classes (3.5m and 4.5m) going to the North Lincs Invaders and the three youth classes (5.5m, 6.8m and the 6.8m Techno) going to the home team of the Covenham Cyclones.
The much depleted members of the Pugneys team who travelled to Covenham kept their hopes of an overall team victory alive, but the Covenham Cyclones will travel to Pugneys Country Park on 21st September with a strong team for the final round of this years Zone Championship, hoping that the Zone Crown will stay in Louth.

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
