All of them really since I am the T15 Competition Organiser for the SE Zone |
How many years have you been windsurfing? 17 years, but first climbed on a board around 1980
Where do you windsurf yourself? Minster Beach, Isle of Sheppey - great for northerlies although a bit on the chilly side, but it is at the bottom of my garden!
What kit do you sail? Anybody's, but 95% of the time on my Naish: fast and fun in small waves
Best windsurfing moment? Winning the BWA (as it was known then) Seniors class in '99. Also winning a heat of slalom at Allonby; I was last after a bad start, but then everyone else missed out the final buoy. So follow your own judgment, not the pack!
Favourite place you have ever windsurfed – UK & abroad? The Doom Bar at Daymer Bay, Cornwall; a sunny force 5-6 north-westerly on an incoming tide - exhilarating! Abroad - it has to be Samos, a 'secret spot' in Greece, for years unknown to most UK sailors
Who or what has inspired you the most? Competing on the race circuit - it pushes you way beyond your normal limits.
How long have you been an RYA instructor? First qualified in 1987
What motivated you to become and instructor? It was a necessary qualification to run a windsurf club at school (and I got 3 days off to do the course!)
What's the biggest buzz about instructing? Seeing the amazing way young windsurfers progress - they're doing at 12 what I did at 40!
Have you had any other careers? I am/was a full time teacher and Head of Year but now I'm taking a year off to go around the world - that's cool! We should be on the beach in Cape Town by the time you read this.
Any hidden talents outside of windsurfing? Played guitar since 14
Any other hobbies? No, windsurfing sort of took over
Alive or dead, who would you most like to meet? The Beatles
Any top tips for T15 clubbers? Put in the hours - it's the only way. Sail when its windy. Get out on the sea (when it's safe, of course)
Finally, whats the best thing for you about team15? T15 has given an amazing boost to young sailors to get into racing - watch out, it's addictive! |
