Many of you may have heard the sad new of the death of Andy Funnell; that he was involved in a jet-skiing accident near his home town of Seaford on Tuesday 15th June. A memorial service was held for him on the beach at Seaford on Tuesday 6th July, which was attended by hundreds of friends, many of whom were windsurfers.

In recent years Andy Funnell has become high profile in the windsurfing world and will be remembered as a great windsurfer; a windsurfer who always pushed the limits. You may have seen Andy at the 2004 Indoor Windsurfing Competition at the London Boat Show, where he won the Jump Contest. A fitting result since Andy was the first person to try out the new ramp, which was constructed by his father, Trevor Funnell and to say Andy was a little nervous on that first jump is probably an under-statement! Andy's ambition for the 2004 season was to compete in the entire PWA World Tour and to challenge the likes of John Skye and Chris Audsley for the No. 1 spot in UK Freewave.

This is the Andy Funnell of today, a fantastic windsurfer, 21 years of age. However, I remember a very different Andy Funnell, the 10 year old Andy Funnell who learnt to windsurf at the 1993 RYA Junior Windsurfing Rally at Ardingly Reservoir, where he turned up with his dad. The Junior Rally was a national event and was the nearest thing we had to T15 back then, except it only lasted for a week every year! So no comparison really, but it was a great week. Andy and his family continued to attend the Rallies and when the event moved to the more permanent location of the South West (Siblyback), the Funnells rented the cottage alongside the one rented by RYA staff and instructors. Andy continued to improve his windsurfing and practised in every minute of his spare time, which gave him the necessary grounding to enable him to become the star that he was. A very nice guy from a lovely family and someone who will be greatly missed.

All photos taken from the UKWA website, with thanks

The RYA and especially the team15 office send their warmest wishes to Trevor, Linda and Kara Funnell and hope that Andy will be an inspiration to the many T15 clubbers who have learnt to windsurf and who continue to push their own limits.

ADOPT-A-BEACH

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants.

Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.

Adopt-a-Beach is definitely relevant to T15ers, which is a Marine Conservation Society project supported by the Green Blue.
