How old were you when you started windsurfing? I first stood on a board when I was 8, but never really took it up until I was 13. I always wanted to be a skier was I was really young.
What made you want to start windsurfing? When I was 13 I went on a school trip and we had some strong winds. My best friend was getting into windsurfing and we just started sailing more and more. I have been hooked ever since I planed across my local lake!
What equipment do you sail? I have 3 freestyle boards and 3 wave boards and for the first time ever they are all custom. When I was young I always dreamed of having loads of boards, but now I have them it is a nightmare. It was much nicer when I had 1 freestyle and 1 wave board, fewer decisions and they would fit in the car.
When and where did you start competing? I started competing early on. Brogborough lake where I sailed had a really good racing scene and I started doing longboard racing. There were lots of different fleets and I worked my way up slowly through to a national level. As soon as I went to college and lived by the sea I started sailing and competing more in the waves and freestyle.
What is your best result and the one you are most proud of? My 4th place in the PWA freestyle in Fuerte was my best result. I think I was more proud of coming 9th in the PWA waves in Ireland. Having lived so far from the sea, it felt really good to do well in the waves.
How did you break onto the world scene? I was very lucky to get a couple of good results at the right moment. I won the Production board freestyle championship in Guincho and finished 2nd in the waves. The conditions were just like the south coast and it was really good fun. The 9th place in Ireland added to that and F2 helped me finance my first full year on the tour.
Who do you socialize with on the World Tour? It is great at the moment. There are so many really cool people doing the tour. I hang with the other English guys a lot. Swifty, Audsley etc. Also the Ozzies boys Ty and Luke and the Brazilians Kauli, Konan and Ricardo. Everyone is pretty funny…we have a laugh.
Tell us some gossip on two pro sailors! I have lots, but all of it will get people in trouble, so I will keep my mouth shut!
Best windsurfing moment ever? Finishing 4th in Fuerte and finding out I was lying 2nd Overall in the freestyle rankings. It was definitely when I realised that my dream for 10 years had become a reality. I had finally made it!
Scariest moment? Having a pretty long hold down at Hookipa. I had been getting a bit relaxed with it all and the wave gave me a big slap to shake me up a bit.
Who or what has inspired you the most? Nik Baker inspired me when I was really young. Recently Francisco Goyas has inspired me. His attitude is great. The biggest influence has been all the great friends that I have sailed with over the years. They have pushed me and most importantly made my sailing fun.
What are your ambitions for the future? To enjoy life and enjoy the amazing opportunity I have to sail all over the world. Also I would like to become the best sailor that I can and hopefully kick ass in the process.
Current move you are trying to master? I am a bit behind on the freestyle. I hurt my ankle and have been off the water for a while. I need to catch up with all the switch foot freestyle moves. In the waves I have been trying to incorporate more freestyle into my riding. Flakas off the lip and a few other thin
Any hidden talents outside of windsurfing? The 4 Ss. Skiing, Snowboarding, Skateboarding and Surfing. I came 2nd at the U15 English schools ski championships.
And if you weren't a windsurfer what career would you be following? I have no idea, which is why I pursued windsurfing with so much effort. All my friends from school work in offices in London, but I couldnt handle it after what I have been doing.
Finally, any top tips for T15 clubbers? Sail as much as possible in all conditions whenever you get a chance. Practice freestyle, as it improves every aspect of your sailing, from waves through to racing, it gives you more control. If you want to do something keep trying until you make it. Finally make sure you have as much fun as possible.
