How old were you when you started windsurfing?
I was three years old and I learned in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.

What made you want to start windsurfing?
My Dad was always into it, and he wanted someone to sail with, so he thought: Who better than my son?

What equipment do you sail?
I sail the whole range of JP Wave and Freestyle boards, and I have Neilpryde Zones and Expressions for sails. I use the new X9 Wave Masts and X7 Wave booms.

When and where did you start competing?
I started in Clacton, on the BWA circuit back when it was called that, and I think that I was about 11 years old.

What is your best result and the one you are most proud of?
My Best result was coming 2nd in the Fuerteventura PWA Grand Prix Freestyle event this year, and it is also the one that I am most proud of!

How did you break onto the world scene?
I did my first event in Lake Garda as Red Bull offered to help me get out there. I think that I came 17th. Then I did the PWA waves in Ireland the same year (2000 I think) and I came up against Kevin Pritchard in the first heat!

Who do you socialize with on the World Tour?
Everyone is pretty sociable, but I would say that the people I hang around with most at the moment are Nik Baker, Greg Allaway and Jason Polakow. We generally tend to stay together at events as we are all on team MPG, and we train together every morning in the Gym in Maui.

Tell us some gossip on two pro sailors!
One of the young British sailors who will have to remain unnamed for legal reasons rolled their friend's nice little jeep on the way back from the nightclub, and then just left it at the airport without saying a word. No one else has actually done anything naughty as we are all very well behaved individuals who try and steer clear of trouble at all costs

Best windsurfing moment ever?
Pulling a wave 360 at Hookipa.

Scariest moment?
Breaking everything on a big day at Lanes when it was Kona winds, and having to swim in getting trashed by 10’ Hawaiian waves with just the board.

Who or what has inspired you the most?
Getting a 4th in Fuerte in 2001 inspired me a lot, as it allowed me to see that getting up there was possible, especially as I won the 1st round.

What are your ambitions for the future?
To be World Champion in waves and Freestyle at some point, and never to have to get a proper job.

Current move you are trying to master?
The Puneta!

Any hidden talents outside of windsurfing?
Cooking and making movies!

And if you weren't a windsurfer what career would you be following?
A stock trader in the city.

Finally, any top tips for T15 clubbers?
Just to get as much time on the water as you possibly can as it all counts, and will all help in the end. Also, when you start doing British and international events, try not to get sidetracked by all the cool parties. There is plenty of time for that after the events!

ADOPT-A-BEACH

The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants.

Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.

Adopt-a-Beach is definitely relevant to T15ers, which is a Marine Conservation Society project supported by the Green Blue.
