This weekend saw the start of the South West South and South West North Team15 regional inter club championship with opening events staged at Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club on Saturday (28th June) and Roseland Paddle and Sail, St. Mawes on Sunday (29th June).
After a very close interclub championship last year the South West teams have been training hard over the winter and the eagerly anticipated first rounds saw some exciting races.
Up in Bristol hosts Axbridge Animals, fielded a strong team of 15 across all the five classes contested. Competition was tough out on the water especially from current regional champions the Croft Farm Flyers who sailed some impressive races winning the 3.5m, 4.5m and 5.5m classes. The SCOEC Screamers also put in a great performance winning the 6.8m Techno class.
Despite winning just one of the classes, 6.8m, the Animals scooped event victory on points difference and start the championship how they mean to go on.
It was a home team win in the South West South region too with hosts Roseland Waveriders capitalising on their 11 strong team but it wasn't made easy for them. Bude's Tamar Tigers dominated the 5.5m class winning almost every race and claimed class victory while the Siblyback Warriors sailed some similarly great races winning the 4.5m and 6.8m Techno classes. As current regional champions the Waveriders look to be on course for another regional victory.
The West Zone also saw some T15 action this weekend at Wirral Sailing Centre who hosted the second event of the regions championship. Having won event one hosts, the West Kirby Warriors, were keen to make it a double and fielded their strongest team. Current National Champions Team Astbury had other ideas and matched the Warriors full team and arrived ready to do battle on the water and make their mark on the competition.
The warriors were on fire though and posted some of the best results ever seen at a T15 event, winning every single class and the well deserved event victory.
Supported by industry leaders Neilson, Tushingham/Starboard, Ultra Sport/Bic, Windsurf magazine, Boards magazine and Neil Pryde, T15 was set up by the RYA to provide youngsters up to the age of 15 with the opportunity to learn all about windsurfing and improve their skills in a friendly club environment. Weekly training sessions take place at RYA approved centres and clubs and are run by RYA trained instructors and T15 coaches. All safety aspects are taken care of and equipment can be provided to children who don’t have their own kit yet.
